In Texas, it is legal to carry a handgun in a car if you have a valid concealed handgun license (CHL). A CHL allows you to carry a handgun concealed on your person or in a vehicle.
To obtain a CHL, you must:
* Be at least 21 years old
* Be a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident
* Not be convicted of a felony or certain misdemeanors
* Pass a criminal background check
* Complete a handgun safety course
Once you have obtained a CHL, you may carry your handgun in your car in one of the following ways:
* In a holster or belt clip that is attached to your body
* In a concealed handgun case that is locked in the glove compartment or center console of your car
* In a gun case that is locked in the trunk of your car
You may not carry your handgun in your car if:
* You are intoxicated
* You are under the influence of drugs
* You are committing a crime
* You are in a school zone
* You are in a courthouse
* You are in a polling place
* You are in a church
* You are in a hospital
* You are in a bar
* You are in a restaurant that serves alcohol
If you are carrying a handgun in your car, you must be aware of the following laws:
* You must display your CHL to any law enforcement officer who asks for it.
* You must not carry a handgun in a public place where it is prohibited.
* You must not carry a handgun in a vehicle that is not owned or leased by you.
* You must not carry a handgun in a vehicle that is being used to transport a child under the age of 17.
Penalties for Violating Handgun Laws
If you violate any of the handgun laws in Texas, you could be charged with a Class A misdemeanor. This offense is punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.
