How to Float a Pontoon Boat on a River

Pontoon boats are large flat-bottom boats primarily used for short boat rides and casual cruising along the river. They have a smaller engine and do not move as quickly as most power boats—for this reason, pontoon boats are ideal for anyone just looking to enjoy a leisurely day on the water. If you own a pontoon boat, and you want to get it floating on the river, you must unload the boat from its trailer. It might seem like a daunting task to back up such a large object, but with a little practice, trailering your pontoon boat will an easy process.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare all the gear necessary to operate your pontoon boat and load it into the boat prior to the launch.

    • 2

Place your vehicle in position, aligned with the boating ramp. Make sure your tires and trailer are as straight as possible.

    • 3

Reverse the vehicle and boat trailer in as straight a line as possible. Check your side mirrors to help you do this. When the trailer appears more in one mirror than the other, turn the wheel the opposite direction to correct yourself. Reverse very slowly and carefully—if you have a friend, enlist his help in backing up in a straight line.

    • 4

Reverse until the stern of the pontoon boat is hanging over the water. At this point, unlock the winch strap from your trailer and remove any pins or devices holding the outboard motor from slipping back. Continue reversing until the boat is fully submerged in the water.

    • 5

Allow the pontoon boat to float free of the trailer. Have a friend hold the bowline or tie a line to your vehicle to prevent the boat from floating free.

    • 6

Drive up the ramp and park your vehicle. The boat is now in the water, ready for a day of leisure on the river.
