The Manufacturing History of Classic Boats

During the early civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia, boats were widely used as a form of transports along the Nile, Euphrates and Tigris Rivers. Later, European and Chinese reformed boat designs. Classic boats were mass-produced in America.

  1. Classic Silver Line Boats

    • Classic Silver Line Boats were first manufactured in 1959 by the Greater Moorhead Development Corporation. In addition to the Silver Line, which was a runabout, the Free Way line was a deckless fishing boat. These classic boats were manufactured in Hawley, Minnesota. Later in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, larger, more expensive boats were manufactured.

    Elco

    • Specializing is motorboats, Elco first introduced electric engines to the world of boating in the 1800s. From 1892 to 1949, more than 5,000 motorized watercraft were manufactured from 18-foot gigs to yachts. Some of these yachts were up to 127 feet in length. The company was re-established and manufactures in Athens, New York.

    The History of Wooden Ships

    • Egyptians first manufactured ships made of papyrus that were attached by ropes. In later years, wooden ships were created by Europeans in forms that included galleys and had higher sterns. During the Middle Ages wooden boats were created with a rounder form with higher sides. Eventually, wooden ships were manufactured with two and three masts. Mega yachts, such as Trumpy, and expensive commuters and runabouts such as Gar Wood, dominated the scene until Chris-Craft, Matthews and Gar Wood began to mass produce more affordable, smaller and mid-size cruisers in the 1920s.
