What is the origin of word hand?

The word "hand" has Germanic origins. Its common ancestor across a number of related Germanic languages is the word *handus, which means "hand" or "grip". The word *handus, in turn, is thought to have derived from the Proto-Indo-European root *(s)kand, which also gives rise to the words for "hundred" and "centipede".
