What was the purpose of Matthew Perry sent to japan?

Commodore Matthew Perry was not sent to Japan by the United States government. He was sent on a mission by President Millard Fillmore to negotiate a trade treaty with Japan. The mission was successful and the treaty was signed in 1854.
