RV Canopy Replacement Instructions

Replacing an RV canopy is a challenging task requiring three people. Filing down sharp edges on the canopy tube and rails will prevent the new fabric from snagging and tearing. Three people are required to safely lift the canopy and attach it back onto the RV, so make sure you have friends around when attempting this task.

  • 2 sawhorses

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a dry, sunny day without wind for this project. Position two sawhorses so that they hold the canopy tube and assembly off of the ground. Lay the old canopy fabric out on the ground to protect the new canopy.

    • 2

Center the new canopy fabric onto the canopy tube. Roll the new fabric onto the tube. Have someone to help with this task. Keep the fabric centered as it is completely rolled up onto the canopy tube. Secure the fabric cord ends into the ends of the tube.

    • 3

Install the torsion assembly through the canopy tube. Line the assembly up with the marks made during removal. Place the rivets in the proper place. Use the riveter to rivet the assembly in place.

    • 4

Tighten the spring assembly. The spring should be held in place with the two vice grips that were used during removal. Check the owner's manual for the correct number of times to turn the spring. The exact number varies depending on model and manufacturer of the canopy. Turn the spring counterclockwise for the correct number of times on each side of the assembly. Hold the spring in place with the vice grips and have a helper put a cotter pin into the hole. Bend the cotter pin outward to secure.

    • 5

Place the spring assembly and canopy tube onto the rails. Replace the bolts and tighten them to secure the canopy in place.

    • 6

Thread the canopy cord through the rails. The fabric will follow the cord. Having a person work on each rail makes this much easier and it keeps the fabric centered.

    • 7

Lift the entire canopy unit and walk it toward the RV. Have two people hold the canopy assembly in place while a third attaches it to the RV rafters using lag bolts. Test the canopy for proper operation, close the canopy and secure it to the RV by engaging the travel locks.
