Does the ocean water turn sea shells into sand?

The ocean's waves create friction by crashing on the rocks and cliffs, breaking the shells down into smaller fragments. Ocean water does not turn seashells into sand. The tumbling action combined with the sand already on the beach smooths the broken pieces of the shells into sand.
