Rivers Feeding the Andaman Sea
The Andaman Sea (eastern Indian Ocean) receives flow from major rivers of Myanmar, Thailand, and Malaysia:
Major Rivers (North to South)
- Salween (Thanlwin) River – 2,800 km from Tibetan Plateau through Myanmar. Largest sediment load.
- Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) River – 2,170 km, Myanmar's lifeline. Massive delta (Yangon).
- Sittaung River – Shorter, steep, high sediment, Gulf of Martaban.
- Mekong River – Minor distributary via Bassac reaches Andaman (main flow to South China Sea).
- Chao Phraya River – Thailand's central artery, Bangkok, delta at Gulf of Thailand (connected to Andaman via Strait of Malacca).
- Mae Klong River – Western Thailand, Gulf of Thailand.
- Bang Pakong River – Eastern Thailand, Gulf of Thailand.
- Prachinburi River – Tributary of Bang Pakong.
Notes
- Salween & Irrawaddy deliver ~80% of freshwater/sediment to Andaman.
- Myanmar rivers are largely undammed (Salween free-flowing)—globally rare.
- Mangroves at deltas (Sundarbans-like) critical for fisheries, cyclone protection.
