Basic first aid items are the staples of any emergency kit. In addition to being useful in the event of an accident or sudden health situation, first aid supplies can also come in handy when you are faced with minor health issues like a small cut or sprained ankle. Include adhesive bandages in a variety of sizes that will cover different parts of the body, as well as basic pain relievers and any prescription medications required by passengers, especially those needed in emergencies. Also keep handy ointments, like burn creams, alcohol swabs and eye wash. Other items to include are scissors, tweezers, matches and chemically based ice packs and hand warmers.
Basic food items can give your body the fuel it needs to get through an emergency. As a basic necessity, include at least two 2-liter water bottles. If you are traveling with several people, include enough water to equal 2 liters per person. For food, pack items that provide a lot of calories and are non-perishable. Since you're on the road and can replace food items as you go, also include some items that you can replace as you travel, like beef jerky. Stock cleaning implements, such as paper towels, with the food items to make clean up easier.
If your trip takes you across mountains or any area that might experience snow or extreme cold, place items for dealing with snow and cold in your emergency kit. A mylar blanket that folds up will keep you warm in the event of a crash. Include an ice scraper and foldable snow shovel in the event the car becomes stuck, as well as a bag of salt or gravel. Road flares can help emergency officials find you faster and other motorists avoid you. Make sure every family member or passenger has a coat and proper cold weather shoes, like boots.
Include tools that can help you get the car started or survive after an accident. Pack a flashlight and extra batteries. If possible, bring an extra battery for your cell phone. A small fire extinguisher is also recommended. Tools like vise grips, screwdrivers, hammers and jumper cables can help you get the car started in the event of breakdown. Other items that can be useful during a breakdown include fuses, a tire inflater, a spare tire, oil, windshield washer fluid and antifreeze.
