UK Driving License for Smart Cars: No Special License Required
You do not need a special license to drive a Smart car in the UK. A standard Category B (car) license covers all Smart models (Fortwo, Forfour, Roadster, EQ).
License Requirements
- Minimum age: 17 (16 if receiving higher-rate mobility PIP/DLA).
- Provisional license: + supervised practice + theory/practical tests.
- Full Category B: Vehicles ≤ 3,500 kg MAM, ≤ 8 passenger seats – all Smarts qualify (Fortwo ~750–1,000 kg).
Smart-Specific Considerations
- Automatic-only license (Cat B auto): Fine – all current Smarts are automatic/single-speed EV.
- EV experience: No extra training required, but familiarize with regen braking, instant torque.
- Insurance: Group 1–5 (very low) – cheap to insure; declare modifications.
Historical Note
Pre-2001 licenses included "Group A" (motorcycle) entitlement – irrelevant for Smarts. Post-1997 licenses require separate motorcycle test.
If You're Visiting
- EU/EEA license: Valid until expiry.
- Other countries: Valid 12 months from residency; then exchange or UK test (check GOV.UK).
- International Driving Permit (IDP): Not a license—supplement only; not needed for EU/EEA licenses.
Bottom Line
Smart car = regular car license. No extra cost, test, or restriction. Enjoy the parking advantage.
