Why did William Wallace start fighting?

There are no records that indicate exactly why William Wallace began fighting or when he came to prominence. However, according to some popular historical accounts, William Wallace started gaining attention around 1297 at the time when Scotland's King John Balliol had been taken captive by King Edward I of England, marking the start of Edward's conquest of Scotland during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
