How do they dye the Chicago river green?

They don't. The Chicago River has been dyed green on St. Patrick's Day only a handful of times, starting in 1962 and ending in 1966. Since then, the river has been dyed using a non-toxic, biodegradable vegetable dye each year since 1967.
