Handicapped Parking Rules at BART Stations

The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is a convenient way to travel in the San Francisco Bay Area, where traffic can be congested and street parking difficult. Most commuters and travelers will drive to a BART station, park their cars and take the train to work, school or other destinations. The price to park depends on the BART station. Monthly parking passes may also be purchased. Handicap parking is subject to the rules of handicap street parking plus BART specific regulations.
  1. Basics

    • The handicap parking symbol.

To use a handicap parking space, you must have the proper identification. This identification is usually a blue and white placard with an image of a person in a wheelchair, identical to the symbol painted in each handicap parking space. To apply for a handicap permit, you should speak to your doctor. A doctor will examine your pain and discomfort and conclude whether or not it is sufficient for a permit.

    Daily Parking

    • Daily parking at certain BART stations ranges from $1 to $5. If you are unsure about the price of the daily parking fee at a BART station, check online or ask a BART attendant. Parking hours occur Monday through Friday from 4:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Those parking in handicap spots are required to pay the same fee as those parking in regular spots.

    Limits

    • During weekdays, all parking spaces at BART have a 24 hour limit. All vehicles, including those parked in handicap spaces, will be ticketed if left in the lot over 24 hours. BART.gov states that during weekends, "the 24 hour rule is waived at the start of train service on Friday through 2 a.m. Monday and major holidays that fall on a Monday or Friday."
