How to Raise a Travel Trailer

When preparing your RV for long-term storage, there are several steps you will need to take to ensure that your trailer is ready for use next time. Some of the most important steps include shutting off the main propane gas switch, covering exterior vents and sealing all areas where mice and rodents can burrow. Removing the batteries along with all consumables and food is also highly recommended. You will also want to lift the trailer to keep weight off wheels and prevent flat spots on your tires.

Things You'll Need

  • Level area large enough to fit the trailer
  • Automobile floor jack rated for your trailer's weight
  • Cinderblocks to support trailer (quantity depends on height of your trailer)

Instructions

  1. Cinderblocks

    • 1

Position the trailer in a level location suitable for long-term storage. Avoid low overhead trees that might drop leaves or limbs on your trailer's roof. Clear any weeds and shrubs that might grow up around the trailer creating a place for rodents to live.

    • 2

Select the number of cinderblocks required to raise the trailer off the ground at each support point. Cinderblocks will be placed in areas not vulnerable to weight-bearing damage, such as underneath the tongue and under structural beams behind the tires. Choose enough cinderblocks to keep the trailer level while the wheels are off the ground.

    • 3

Raise the tongue of the trailer. Slip the required amount of cinderblocks underneath the tongue.

    • 4

Locate your trailer's chassis support points in front of one set of tires on one side. Position your floor jack underneath one of the trailer's structural supports. Raise one side of the trailer up high enough to position the cinderblocks under a support beam behind that tire.

    • 5

Lower trailer onto blocks and repeat the above steps to raise the other side. Place the same amount of cinderblocks under another chassis support point behind the tires on the other side. Lower the trailer onto the cinderblocks. Your trailer's wheels should now be supported by cinderblocks
