How to Cool a Pop Up Travel Trailer

Cooling a new high end pop up travel trailer is easy. Just turn on the air conditioner. Older models and many budget models of pop up trailers do not come with a fan or air conditioner. To cool one of these pop up travel trailers, strategic placement of the trailer combined with the use of fans will get the job done. Fans are available for even the most basic pop up travel trailer. Choose fans powered by batteries or solar energy if electricity is scarce.

A shady site is the best place to park.

Park the pop up travel trailer in a shady location, on grass if possible. This will greatly reduce the amount of heat that builds up inside the trailer. Avoid campgrounds that have cement or asphalt parking areas for the pop up trailers. Cement and asphalt retain heat throughout the day and release it back into the air as temperatures cool down. This situation makes cooling a pop up travel trailer difficult.

Open all screened openings and secure the flaps in an open position to allow for cross ventilation. Keep the door open if there is screening available; otherwise, keep it closed to prevent critters and bugs from entering.

Electric fans help cool travel trailers.

Place fans in the main living area and in the two bedding areas. The main living area of your pop up travel trailer may have electrical outlets to use. After you hook up the pop up trailer to the shore electrical supply, plug in the fans. Shore electricity is any electricity provided by a house, outdoor electrical outlet or campsite. If your pop up travel trailer does not have electricity, use battery operated or solar powered fans instead.

Open the awning to the pop up travel trailer. If your trailer does not have one, they are easy to order and install. Measure the length of the side of the pop up travel trailer that has the door with a tape measure. Use this measurement to order an awning from a reputable company specializing in campers such as Camping World. Awnings will make a big difference in the comfort of your pop up travel trailer.

Install the awning prior to traveling. Following the installation directions that came with your awning, mark the areas that require drilling with a pencil. Put on safety goggles. Predrill the required holes and attach the awning frame and hardware. Open and close the awning several times to be sure the awning is working properly and that it does not interfere with the opening and closing of the pop up trailer.
