Why is the tower bridge suspension?

Tower Bridge is not a suspension bridge. It is a combined bascule and suspension bridge, with two towers, each 213 feet (65 m) high, that support the suspension cables. The bridge deck is suspended from these cables, and the bascules, or leaves, of the bridge can be raised to allow tall ships to pass through.
