Greek scientist Archimedes (287-212 BC) invented many important machines, including a compound pulley, a screw pump (sometimes known as Archimedes' screw), and the forerunner to a hydraulic press.
The crane was another machine invented by Greek engineers, and was powered by a treadmill or human labor. The Roman engineer Vitruvius credited the Greek architect Ctesibius (died c. 222 BCE) of Alexandria for invent of the pump.
