Anderson Air Force Base: History & Current Status
Anderson Air Force Base no longer exists as a military installation.
History
- Established: 1944 as North Field, Guam.
- Renamed: 1949 for Brig. Gen. James Roy Andersen.
- Key Role: Strategic bomber base (B-29, B-52) during Cold War, Vietnam War, Gulf War.
- Closed: 1993 (BRAC), not 1968. *Correction: The base was transferred to the Navy in 1993, then joint-based. The airfield remains active.*
Current Status
- Andersen Air Force Base (spelling: Andersen) is now part of Joint Region Marianas, a combined Navy/Air Force installation.
- Civilian Airport: The adjacent Guam International Airport (GUM) (formerly Naval Air Station Agana) handles commercial flights.
- No Public Commercial Phone: Military bases don't publish commercial numbers. For base contacts, use the official website or the base operator: (671) 366-1110 (DSN 315-366-1110).
Note on the 1968 Date
The 1968 reference may confuse Andersen with another facility (e.g., Naval Air Station Agana's transition). Andersen AFB has operated continuously since 1944.
