Glencairn Station (Toronto Line 1): Still Under Construction, Targeting 2024+ Opening
As of 2024, Glencairn Station on Toronto's Line 1 (Yonge-University) has not yet opened.
Status Timeline
- Original Plan: Part of the Yonge North Subway Extension (YNSE) — 7.4 km, 5 stations (Steeles, Clark, Royal Orchard, Bridge, Richmond Hill Centre). Glencairn was not in the original YNSE scope.
- Confusion Source: Glencairn is an existing station on the Barrie GO Line (commuter rail) at Glencairn Ave & Yonge St. The subway station is a proposed infill station between Lawrence West and Eglinton West (Line 1), advocated by local councillors to serve the dense Lawrence Heights redevelopment.
- Current Status (2024): Not funded / not approved in TTC 10-Year Capital Plan. Classed as "Unfunded Future Infill Station." Environmental Assessment (EA) completed for YNSE (north of Finch), but Glencairn infill requires separate EA, design, funding.
- Earliest Realistic Opening: 2030s, contingent on funding priority vs. Ontario Line, Scarborough Extension, YNSE.
Existing Transit at Glencairn Ave
- GO Transit Barrie Line: Glencairn GO Station (peak-period service only).
- TTC Bus: 97 Yonge, 320 Yonge Night Bus.
Bottom Line: No subway station at Glencairn yet. Don't plan your commute around it. The GO train is the current rail option.
