The Channel Tunnel (or "Chunnel") is exclusively a rail tunnel—there's no roadway for driving through it. The crossing takes approximately 35 minutes on Eurostar passenger trains connecting London with Paris, Brussels, and other European cities.
For vehicle transport, drivers use the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle service, where cars, motorcycles, and trucks are loaded onto specialized train carriages at Folkestone (UK) and Calais (France) terminals. This vehicle shuttle also takes about 35 minutes for the tunnel portion, plus loading/unloading time.
The tunnel stretches 50.45 kilometers (31.35 miles) under the English Channel, with 37.9 kilometers (23.5 miles) undersea—making it the world's longest undersea tunnel section. It consists of three parallel tunnels: two rail tunnels and a service tunnel.
