What people use the Brooklyn Bridge for?
The Brooklyn Bridge is a hybrid suspension/cable-stayed bridge in New York City. It spans the East River between the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Built from 1869 to 1883, it was the first steel-wire suspension bridge constructed. It was, at the time, the longest suspension bridge in the world, with a main span of 1,595 feet (486 m), and was the first fixed crossing of the East River.
The Brooklyn Bridge has two levels. The upper level carries pedestrian and bicycle traffic, while the lower level carries vehicular traffic. The bridge also has a bike path, which is shared by cyclists and pedestrians.
Today it continues to be a vital transportation link between the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Bridge is also a popular tourist destination.
