Decide on a destination and whether or not you will need to purchase a return ticket. If you intend to leave Germany, make sure that you select a travel service capable of issuing you an international ticket. This is particularly important if you intend to leave the European Union. Otherwise, simply look up the nearest train station to the city or town you wish to visit. Most big cities have several train stations within their borders so choose the one closest to your final destination.
Approach the station you intend to leave from and book a ticket to your planned destination. The attendant will print your tickets out for you. However, some rail lines only allow travellers to book a ticket on the day they intend to travel.
Access the rail line's website and purchase the ticket from the site if you wish to book in advance. This is a viable option for those who do not speak German, as they may find booking a journey in a train station very difficult. Most websites provide translations into English and up to 15 other languages.
Print the ticket provided by the website. Bring the electronic ticket with you and arrive at the station at least 20 minutes before your train is due to depart, to allow for platform announcements, any changes to the schedule and going through passport control.
