Rail Travel in the Ukraine

In the Ukraine, the preferred mode of travel is by train. There are two types of train travel: long distance and short distance. The long-distance trains are sleeper trains with rooms available in first and second class. The short-distance trains are electric trains (elektrichki) that connects large cities to small villages. Here are some quick facts to help you find your way around Ukraine by train.
  1. Metro

    • The Metro is Ukraine's subway, and tickets to use the Metro are cheap. This is the most popular way for locals and tourists to get around.

    Ukrainian Railroad

    • The Ukrainian Railroad is the national rail service, which travels throughout Ukraine and connects with outlying countries.

    Routes to Minsk

    • A main Ukrainian route to Minsk, Belarus, is from Kyiv. This line is available through the Ukrainian Railroad. During the summer, a line is also available from Varna, Bulgaria, to Minsk.

    Routes to Lviv

    • A train from St. Petersburg, Russia, through Minsk is the only way to reach Lviv by train.

    Connection

    • Trains to Ukraine connect only from Russia, Serbia, Germany, Slovakia, Poland, Czech Republic, Croatia, Kazakhstan, Hungary, Belarus and Moldova.
