Decide on the type of tickets you need. An affordable city-to-city ticket can easily be purchased online on the German Railways Web site. See the Resources section below for a link. You can also purchase tickets by phone by calling 011 (+49) 1805 996633. If you prefer to go in person, tickets are also available at either of the two train stations in Dresden.
Book moderately priced Rail Passes on the Eurail Web site. See the Resources section below for a link. You can also call (877) RAIL PASS.
Pick your preferred travel time. An InterCity Express train with several stops will take about ten hours. A high-speed train will take about seven and a half hours.
Purchase a Eurail Rail Pass if Stuttgart is not your final destination. There are many Rail Pass packages available, but the cheapest fares can be found over the Internet.
Choose a Eurail Select Pass to create your own customized train trip to three, four or five bordering countries. Six-, eight-, or ten-day passes include an additional free day of travel.
Save money. There are Youth (for those 26 years of age or younger) or Saver versions of most Eurail Rail Passes.
Make sure you are at the right train station in Dresden. There are two stations in Dresden--the main station and the northern station, Dresden-Neustadt.
Board your train. If you decide you want a couchette (sleeper) you might still be able to purchase one. Check with the conductor. He'll even bring you blankets and a pillow.
