How to Book Train Travel From Interlaken to Zurich

Interlaken, in the center of Switzerland, is a popular destination for skiers and people who simply love winter sports. Reaching the city is easy from points throughout Switzerland, including Zurich, the country's largest city. Don't bother flying, because you'll miss some of the most breathtaking countryside in all of Europe. Take the train instead!

  1. Know the Train Route

      Start your journey to Zurich at Interlaken Ost, the busiest of the two stations in the city.

      Choose to take a direct train from Interlaken to Zurich. It's the most convenient way of getting between the two cities.

      Choose to take the scenic route by connecting to Zurich in Bern, the capital of Switzerland and one of the region's primary transport hubs. This would be the only additional stop if you do not book direct travel between the two cities.

      Use Zurich as a great starting location for a European tour. Zurich has train service to just about every major European capital, including Paris, Rome, Madrid and Vienna.

      To book tickets, contact Eurail at 1-866-638-7245 or visit their Web site (see Resources, below). Start by selecting the option for 'Train Tickets and Schedules,' visible on the left of your screen.

      Book your ticket on the direct train to Zurich as soon as you can. There is only one direct departure from Interlaken a day, and it can fill up fast.

      Buy a Swiss Eurailpass while you are in the country. It offers travelers savings on multiple train fares by offering unlimited boarding for the life of the pass.

      Book tickets in economy class for your trip from Interlaken to Zurich. The fares are only about $100 regardless of the time of year. Those with a Eurailpass, however, will automatically enjoy these savings.

      Plan to travel from Interlaken to Zurich during the afternoon and early evening. Trains do not commonly depart for Zurich until after 12 p.m.

      Select from any number of different departure times bound for Zurich. There are typically four to five different trains leaving for Zurich throughout the day, and they leave on the hour. Note that not all of these five trains are direct connections.
