Decide the time frame during which you'd like to travel from Zurich to Bern. There are numerous options during the day. You shouldn't have any problem finding a trip that fits your schedule. Travel mid-morning or at night if you want to avoid the crowds.
Log onto the English-language Swiss Railways Web site (click on the link in Resources below). Enter the departure city (Zurich) and the arrival city (Bern) in the appropriate boxes. You can leave the boxes to the right as they are. If you want to make the trip via another city, you can type the name of that city in the bottom box.
Enter the earliest time you're able to travel, click "Search connection." The Web site will return a listing of possible trains to complete your journey. You'll notice that some of the trips will take just under an hour, while others will take closer to 90 minutes. The faster trains will cost you about $10 more than the slower trains.
Book a train with a restaurant car if you'd like to grab a bite to eat while you travel. The trains that offer this service have an icon next to them that indicates they have food service. If you book the earliest train at just past 5:00, a restaurant car with hot coffee may prove to be a godsend!
Book a train with a family carriage if you're traveling with young children. These family carriages feature slides and other playground equipment to keep the kids entertained for the trip.
