How to Travel to Cornwall, England

Cornwall is Britain's most southwestern county. This rocky peninsula is a popular and romantic vacation destination, featuring beaches, fishing villages, lighthouses, historic castles, and wild moorland. Increasingly, Cornwall is a fashionable destination for "foodies" and surfers. The outdoor Minack Theatre sits on the cliffs near Lands End. Other attractions include the Lost Gardens of Heligan, the Eden Project eco-attraction, and Tintagel Castle, famed home of King Arthur and Merlin. Fly into a main U.K. or Irish airport to connect to Cornwall by regional airline.

Instructions

  1. Planning Your Flight

    • 1

Plan your best route to Cornwall. Look for flights to Newquay Cornwall Airport (NQY) connecting in Charlotte, North Carolina (CLT) and London Gatwick (LGW). Journey time from Charlotte is under eleven hours. Fly from Chicago, Newark, Philadelphia, or Boston via Charlotte in around 13 to 15 hours.

    • 2

Shop around for the best flight deals from your home city. Consider alternative routes, such as flying to Bristol. You can also fly to Manchester, Leeds/Bradford, Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Glasgow, or Edinburgh and connect to Newquay, Plymouth City, or Exeter international airports.

    • 3

Take flight times and layovers into account, as well as price. The Charlotte route was the best in 2010, with early evening departures arriving in Cornwall mid-morning next day. Layovers in both Charlotte and Gatwick are usually only one to two hours.

    Booking Your Flight

    • 4

Book through to Newquay for the best convenience or to London if you prefer reaching Cornwall by train or car.

    • 5

Book hotels and car hire when making your flight reservation, in order to save money. Book your accommodation through the Cornish Tourist Board if you prefer to stay at a bed and breakfast.

    • 6

Book rail tickets online if desired.

    • 7

Travel from Newquay Cornwall Airport to your final destination by your choice of taxi, car, bus, or train.

Train Tickets and Car Hire (optional)

    • 8

Travel by train or car into Cornwall for a slower but scenic option. From Gatwick Airport take Gatwick Express to London Victoria. Connect at Victoria to London Paddington. From Heathrow take Heathrow Express direct to Paddington.

    • 9

Take a train from Paddington to any Cornish destination, connecting in Plymouth. Buy a sleeper ticket for greatest comfort or to combat jet lag.

    • 10

Change in Plymouth for all main Cornish vacation destinations, including Falmouth, Truro, St. Ives, and Penzance.

    • 11

Hire a car at any arrival airport or at Plymouth to drive into Cornwall. Hire a car in Newquay or Penzance if you fly direct. The main car hire chains are available.
