Pack a small overnight bag for your stay on the train. Coach passengers might want to bring an extra pillow. Personal toiletries and medications are typically all that is needed. Bring a book, cards, laptop computer or other entertainment to pass the time.
Arrive at your departure station by 2:30 p.m. to check in no later than 3 p.m. Avoid rushing and confusion by checking in even earlier -- between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. There are overnight accommodations and restaurants near both stations for those who want to arrive the night before or early on the day of departure.
Receive your car number. A magnetic number will be placed on the driver's door and will be written on your ticket holder. Pull your car up to the unloading zone.
Remove from your car anything you want on the train. Do not leave valuables in the car. Leave the key in the ignition and enter the station. You will not see your vehicle again until you and it arrive at your destination.
Check in and select your meal time. Relax in the station until boarding time is called.
Board your railroad car and find your reserved seat or bedroom compartment.
Depart the train the next morning at your destination. Exit the track area to the lounge or outside. Wait as the cars are unloaded and car numbers are called.
Go to your car as soon as your number is called. Stow your overnight items in your car and depart the station.
