Trike Tours in Scotland

In 2006, Gordon Shon and Tracy Ferguson launched Trike Tours Scotland, modeled after a small trike-touring operation they had observed in Sydney, Australia, according to an interview in "Ryanair Magazine." Based in Edinburgh, Trike Tours Scotland will travel as far as the Isle of Skye off the northern coast. The trike is a powerful three-wheeled motorcycle, driven by a chauffeur, with seats for two passengers. Riders receive helmets fitted with headsets for communication, complimentary refreshments of Scotch whiskey and shortbread cookies and photographs from the tour. Although Trike Tours Scotland still dominates business in the country, Alba Trike Tours, offering virtually the same amenities, has begun operation near Glasgow.
  1. Edinburgh City Center

    • One of the shorter tours at one hour and 20 minutes, passengers first visit the Grassmarket, a section of medieval buildings arranged around a large square, once a market for horses and cattle, as well as the scene of public executions. Edinburgh Castle, high above the city on a volcanic ledge, is also on the tour. From there, the trike passes Holyrood, where the queen stays when she comes to Scotland. Arthur's Seat, a hill made of lava sitting 823 feet above Edinburgh, provides a panoramic view of the city and is one of the last stops. Trikes are the only tour vehicles allowed on the path to the top of Arthur's Seat.

    Loch Lomond

    • Celebrated in poetry and song, Loch Lomond is the largest body of inland freshwater, or lake, in the British Isles. Five miles wide and 24 miles long, it is surrounded by Trossachs National Park. Drover's Trail lies at the top of the loch, where cattle were driven to market beginning in medieval times. Many varieties of wildlife exist here. Tours embark from several points in Glasgow: Queen Street Station, Central Station and Paisley Gilmour Street Station. The tour takes three hours and includes stops at a bird sanctuary on the way and Dumbarton Castle, once home to King Robert the Bruce.

    Inverness

    • After departing from the Inverness railway station, this trike tour heads for Loch Ness in the Highlands region. Even if you do not see the elusive Nessie, the Loch Ness monster of local legend, the tour makes a stop at Drumnadrochit, a town that boasts the largest collection of Nessie memorabilia anywhere. Tourists also encounter the Caledonian Canal. The three-hour tour includes Urquhart Castle, a 13th century castle now in ruins. The trike tour company asks that this tour be booked at least five days in advance.
