How to Design a Tunnel

Design a new and modern tunnel that will transport you under, over or through the ground. Tunnels are designed depending on the material that needs to be broken through, so when designing your unique tunnel, research your location and the material that you need to construct through. This will open your mind to new ideas in how to create a stable, accessible and practical tunnel. Once you have identified your location and construction materials, design outside of the box.

Instructions

    • 1

Research various tunnel designs. Investigate tunnels in your neighborhood and search online for different tunnel constructions for inspiration.

    • 2

Define the location of your tunnel. Outline where you intend to build your construction. Examine the material you will be working with. Identify whether you are working with manmade concrete, clay, mud or stone. Once you have identified your material, this will provide insight into the type of tunnel you can build.

    • 3

Pick up your graph paper, and draw an outline of the construction you will be working with. This could be a road or a cliff edge. Depending on what it is, draw the structure. Take your pencil, and draw a line as to where the road will meet the edge and the start of the tunnel. Continue this line with the ruler through to the center of the piece of paper. This is the route your structure will follow.

    • 4

Take a compass, and center the dot in the middle of your paper. Draw a circle with a circumference of 3 inches. This will create a simple tunnel design shape. Follow the central dot with the ruler, and draw the perspective of the road and edges of the tunnel. Add lights attached to the ceiling and edges to illuminate the tunnel for travelers.

    • 5

Draw the previous template on a new piece of paper and change the shape of your tunnel. Draw a rectangular square. Add florescent LED lights to the floor and ceiling. Color the tunnel walls a bright color to add some flair to your design.

    • 6

Continue experimenting with different shapes to use within your tunnel. Sketch a wiggly line or a narrow entrance. Sketch four or five designs until you find a final design that you want to construct.
