To apply for a permit, drivers must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid U.S. state issued driver's license. The license has to be valid for the duration of the trip.
The completed written application needs to be filled out in its entirety and signed. Two recent 2-inch x 2-inch photographs have to be attached to the application. A $10 fee applies.
AAA clubs throughout the United States and Canada are authorized to issue an Inter-American Driving Permit. The permit is valid for one year from the date of issuance.
Inter-American Driving Permits are not renewable. After the permit expires, the applicant has to reapply for a new one.
The Inter-American Driving Permit is not legal in the U.S. It must be accompanied by the traveler's government issued driver's license. It can not be used as a form of identification when traveling.
