What Is an Inter-American Driving Permit?

An Inter-American Driving Permit is valid in Central or South America for travelers wishing to operate a motor vehicle. Strict requirements to obtain the permit have to be met in advance of traveling.
  1. Requirements

    • To apply for a permit, drivers must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid U.S. state issued driver's license. The license has to be valid for the duration of the trip.

    Application Process

    • The completed written application needs to be filled out in its entirety and signed. Two recent 2-inch x 2-inch photographs have to be attached to the application. A $10 fee applies.

    Permit Issuance

    • AAA clubs throughout the United States and Canada are authorized to issue an Inter-American Driving Permit. The permit is valid for one year from the date of issuance.

    Renewing Permits

    • Inter-American Driving Permits are not renewable. After the permit expires, the applicant has to reapply for a new one.

    Uses

    • The Inter-American Driving Permit is not legal in the U.S. It must be accompanied by the traveler's government issued driver's license. It can not be used as a form of identification when traveling.
