How to Drive in Holland With a US Driving Permit

Holland, also known as the Netherlands, is a member country in the European Union. Drivers there drive on the right side of the road, just like in the United States, and traffic laws, including seat belt and speeding laws, are well enforced. Depending on how long you intend to stay in the Netherlands, you may have to look at different options, but for most people, driving in the country with a U.S. driver's license is quite simple.

  Confirm with your travel agent, the U.S. State Department, or a Netherlands tourist organization that laws have not changed regarding driving in the country with a U.S. driver's license.

  Ensure that your driver's license is valid and up to date. If you are traveling for less than 180 days, you can drive on a normal U.S. driver's license without making any special arrangements.

  Discuss the situation with a car rental agency if you will be renting a car. Many such agencies charge an additional fee for drivers under age 25 and in some cases, may not allow you to rent at all.
