Utilize one of the online mileage calculators provided by websites such as Rand McNally and Trip Calculator. You simply put in your starting point and ending point to see how long the trip will take. These calculators provide an estimated driving time along with the mileage based upon the speed limits of the roads and average car speed, which is usually 60 miles per hour, or mph.

Use an online map such as Google Maps to find out the driving distance. The routes can be altered depending on the roads that you plan to take, which will alter the overall mileage of the trip.

    • 3

Use a calculator to determine the driving time of the trip by first determining your average mph. If you do not know this information use the number 60 as an average mph. Divide 60 by the total mileage provided to you by the online mapping service. This number will be your driving time in minutes.

Add in time for stops along the way. If you normally stop once every hour, add 10 or 15 minutes per hour to your total estimated driving time. This will provide an estimate of the total driving time of your trip between states. This number is based entirely upon your personal driving habits.

Use a GPS service such as Tom Tom or Garmin to help estimate your drive time between states. These services estimate the time based upon construction and heavy traffic, so may be more accurate than other methods of estimation. They are often expensive though, and you may have to purchase a service contract with the company to use them.
