How to Calculate Driving Time Between Cities

When traveling it is often nice to estimate how long the trip will take. However, many things may occur along the way to make the estimate incorrect. Estimations for driving involves a formula which uses distance, time and speed. While this formula provides a general estimate, many factors during the trip can change the driver's travel time.

Instructions

    • 1

Know the distance between cities. Google Maps and Yahoo Maps allow to search for two cities and provide the distance between the cities. For example, the distance between Buffalo, New York, and Cleveland, Ohio, is about 190 miles.

    • 2

Estimate the average speed for the trip. If the trip is mainly on highways, the average speed should be around 60 mph. If the trip is mainly in urban areas, the average speed should be around 30 mph. For example, the route from Buffalo, New York, to Cleveland, Ohio, is mainly on Interstate 90, so by considering highway driving time and very little city driving time, the average speed will be around 60 mph.

    • 3

Divide the distance by the average speed to arrive at travel time. In the example, 190 miles divided by 60 mph equals 3.16 hours.

    • 4

Convert any decimal to minutes. Multiply the decimal by 60 and divide by 100. In the example, 16 * 60 equals 960, which, divided by 100, equals 9.6 minutes.
