How to Calculate Driving Times

When you are headed off on a road trip, it is nice to know how long it will take you to reach your destination. However, a measurement in miles won't help you much when you really want to know how long a trip will take in hours and minutes. You can convert miles to time based on driving speed and get an estimate of how long you can plan to be in your vehicle.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider an estimated average of your driving speed. Sixty miles per hour is a good estimate because on some highways the limit is 70 miles per hour, some 65 miles per hour and on others only 45 miles per hour.

    • 2

Determine that at this estimated speed, each hour you will travel about 60 miles.

    • 3

Use a map or a computer map program to determine the total number of miles for your trip.

    • 4

Divide this number by 60. This is your estimated driving time. For example if you plan to travel 150 miles, at an estimated speed of 60 miles per hour this trip is going to take about two and a half hours.

    • 5

Estimate the time for any stops. Add 15 minutes for each gas fill-up or rest stop. Add 30 minutes for a fast-food stop and 45 minutes for a sit-down restaurant stop.

    • 6

Add the time for stops to your estimated driving time and this will give you the total amount of time you can expect for the full trip.
