How to Calculate Travel Time Based on Car Speed

Planning for a trip can be a hassle. But it's more of a hassle if travel time is not well thought-out. Comfortable driving legs and avoiding random hotels are two benefits. Once you know your route, you can estimate the distance you'll be traveling, predict your average speed and use a calculator to make a rough time estimate.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the distance you will be traveling.

    • 2

Determine the average speed that the car will travel at. If most of the traveling is done on highways, look at the most common speed limits on that highway for a good estimate on how fast you can drive.

    • 3

Divide the total distance to be traveled by the car's speed to get travel time. For example, if a car needs to travel 100 miles, and is traveling at 65 mph, you would divide 100 by 65 to get 1.54 hours.
