How to Record Mileage in MYOB

The MYOB (Mind Your Own Business) accounting software operates much like QuickBooks or any other accounting program. MYOB is an Australian-based company that has been providing accounting software for more than 20 years. MYOB's Payroll software allows you to record expenses and income for bookkeeping purposes. Recording travel expenses, including mileage, can be done in a few simple steps.

Accounting software is critical for accurate bookkeeping.

Open the MYOB AccountRight Payroll software. If you currently do not have the MYOB AccountRight Payroll software, several options are available ranging in price from $800 to $4300. AccountRight Plus software is good for small businesses with only one person accessing the payroll data; AccountRight Premier allows multiple users into the payroll database; and AccountRight Enterprise enables you to access the database remotely. Each of these programs uses the same steps to record mileage.

Click on "Payroll" from the menu bar, and then go to the "Payroll Categories."

    • 3

Click on the "Wages" tab, and then click "New." The "New" button is located at the bottom of the screen.

Travel mileage is unpredictable and varies with each trip.

Change the wages name to "Mileage." Set the payment type to "Hourly," as this way the amount will change each time, depending on the number of miles.

Change the "Hourly Rate" to the amount the company has agreed to pay (for example, 89 cents per mile). Leanne Berry, MYOB's Certified Consultant Director, suggests that you may also want to overwrite the wages expense account with a mileage/travel expense code.
