How to Cite GIS Data

GIS stands for geographic information systems. GIS data is generated by GIS software applications and can be used, for example, in creating maps. Maps created by GIS software using GIS data can be used as references just as printed maps are. However, the citation style for maps based on GIS data differs from the style used for printed maps. While styles may vary, there is a basic set of information needed to cite GIS data when using a map produced by GIS software.

Instructions

    • 1

Provide the map's title, indicate that the title is for a map, and list the scale to which the map is drawn. For example: "Austin Hill Country" [map]. 1:2000.

    • 2

Name the database that was the source of the GIS data used to create the map and indicate that the source is a computer file. Example: SampleBase GIS Data [computer files].

    • 3

Provide the location of the map's producer, the producer's name and the year of production. Example: Austin, Texas: Sample Producer, 2009.

    • 4

Name the particular GIS software used to create the map, indicate that the software is GIS software, and specify the version if applicable. Example: Using: BrandName GIS [GIS software]. Version 2.0.

    • 5

Provide the software publisher's location and name, and the date the software was released. Example: Los Angeles, California: SamplePublisher Inc., 2000.

    • 6

Combine the recommended reference information to form the citation.

"Austin Hill Country" [map]. 1:2000. SampleBase GIS Data [computer files]. Austin, Texas: Sample Producer, 2009. Using: BrandName GIS [GIS software]. Version 2.0. Los Angeles, California: SamplePublisher Inc., 2000.
