How to Obtain Directions

Getting directions from one place to another used to mean asking locals and hoping their directions were accurate. Today, getting accurate, detailed directions in most cities can be done with the Internet. You can even get directions for a city you've never been to before traveling there, or you can find specific road travel directions between cities.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to Google Maps, Yahoo Maps, or MapQuest. Enter the full address you'll be leaving from and, if possible, the full address of the place you're going. Please note that as of 2009, not all international destinations are available through online services.

    • 2

Enter the city names if you don't know the exact addresses. Also enter the zip codes if they're available. If you don't know the exact address for a large city, your destination's zip code will get you much closer to where you need to go.

    • 3

Choose from the options for types of directions, if options are available. Some websites offer a choice of miles or kilometers, or you can decide to avoid toll roads or major highways.

Print out the directions to take with you on your trip. You can also print out maps. Click the "printer-friendly" icon on the website to get easy-to-read printouts without all the ads.
