How to Get a D Visa

The United States government issues various types of visas including the class D Crewmember Visa. Its purpose is to allow foreign citizens serving on crews of ships or airplanes in American territory to legally maintain a presence in the United States. Persons who receive a class D visa must leave the United States within 29 days. Flying or going by ship from one U.S. destination to another does not qualify as leaving the country, even if the trip carries the crew outside of American territory before reentering, according to the U.S. State Department.
