How to Get a Taiwan Visa

Taiwan is an island off the southeastern coast of mainland China and also known as the Republic of China (it was separated from what is now known as the People's Republic of China in 1949 following a civil war). Citizens of the United States and a number of other countries who wish to remain in Taiwan for more than 30 days must apply for a visa to do so. For stays of less than 30 days for pleasure or business, a visa is not required.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the visa form, which is available on a number of visa advice websites and the Taiwan Bureau of Consular Affairs' website. Fill in the required information on the form and provide two passport photographs.

    • 2

Make sure your passport is valid for at least 90 days after your proposed departure date from Taiwan. However visa advice specialists Visa HQ recommend that you have a passport that is valid for at least six months when traveling, although this is not a Taiwanese regulation. In addition, ensure that your passport has blank visa pages for your visa to be put in.

    • 3

Book your travel tickets. With a Taiwan visa application you are required to submit copies of your tickets and/or your itinerary.

    • 4

Write a personal letter to the Taiwan Overseas Mission. This should explain the purpose of the trip, dates of travel, cities to be visited and where you will be staying.

    • 5

Print a copy of your bank statement. This is to show that you have sufficient funds to cover your expenses while in Taiwan.

    • 6

Mail all the documents and the correct fee to your nearest Taiwan Overseas Mission (Taiwan's diplomatic status means that they are not called embassies). If all documentation is correct, the office will mail back your passport with your visa enclosed within 2 to 3 working days.
