Outline the area to be mapped, leaving at least a 2-inch border around the entire edge of the map. If current maps of the area exist, they can be used as a template to trace the outline. Photocopy the existing map and place it over the poster board. Use a sharpened pencil to punch small holes through the template onto the posterboard below, creating a pattern of small dots. Remove the existing map and connect the dots for the outline.
Choose the items to be identified on the map and the symbol or color to be used to identify each. A city map may show housing, commercial and public use land. A rural map will need symbols for specific crops and animals. Determine additional items to be identified as required by the specific project or intended use of the map.
Sketch in the locations of the symbols and outline any areas that will need to be shaded to indicate details. Use blue for any water features that will be shown. Start at the bottom of the map and work toward the top, adding in the background colors first, then symbols for specific items.
Draw a compass in the upper right margin and clearly mark north with an N. Draw the legend for the map in the bottom margin. Indicate the meaning of the colors and symbols used on the map. Clearly label outstanding features on the map with the black pen to help users identify locations of other objects.
