How to Calculate Mileage Distances
Calculating mileage distance requires basic math and map-reading skills and is a useful skill for travelers, hikers and anyone else trying to get from here to there. Some road maps have the distance between towns and cities listed in small number below the road or highway, so calculating distance is simply a matter of adding the numbers between two locations. All maps have a scale that can be used to determine distance. On a typical scale, for example, 1 inch would represent 100 miles.

Find the legend to determine the map's scale.

Lay the ruler between two places on the map. Count the number of increments used by the scale that lies between the two map points.

Multiply the distance represented by the scale by the number of scale increments between the two places. For example, if 1 inch represents 100 miles, and there are 6 inches between the two places, the places are 600 miles apart.
