How to Drive With Studded Tires

No matter what type of vehicle you're driving, or how well prepared you or your vehicle are, driving in bad weather is always stressful. For driving in some of the most severe weather, such as snow and icy conditions, studded tires are often used. With the proper preparation and caution, using studded tires can help keep your valuable cargo--you, your family, or your belongings--safe until you get home.

Make sure you live in a state where studded tires are permitted and that you purchase the correct studded tires. Studded tires are illegal in 10 states and approved for only seasonal use in 31 states and the District of Columbia. Make sure that the studded tires you purchase are compatible with your car and determine whether you will be installing them on all four wheels or just two wheels. This depends on the state laws and and the type of vehicle you own.

Practice using your studded tires before hitting the road in really bad conditions. Try to fit in some practice driving on ice and snow with your studded tires before driving on major roads. Go to a large, mostly vacant lot, such as a parking lot or even a freshly snow covered field.

Perform all driving functions a little slower when using studded tires. This includes turning more gently, accelerating casually, and braking with ease. Sudden movements can not only cause you to lose control of the vehicle, but can also increase damage to the road caused by studded tires.

Take extra precautions to make your studded tire experience less challenging. When driving in snow and ice, no one factor, such as studded tires, can alleviate all danger. By doing things like running your defroster and keeping items like an ice scraper, sand bags (for added traction if needed) and extra blankets and water--in case of emergency--on hand you decrease your chances of running into serious trouble.
