U..S military campgrounds are located all over the United States. You'll find 244 military campgrounds, with the highest concentration --- 32 campgrounds --- in California. Some of the other states with DoD campgrounds are Alaska and Arizona with 10 sites, Georgia and Washington with 11 campgrounds each, Virginia with 14 campgrounds, Texas with 17 campgrounds and Florida with 18 camping sites.
Military service members and their family members can enjoy unlimited use of Department of Defense campgrounds. Other people approved to use the sites include members of the commissioned corps of the Public Health Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, military service retirees and their family members, former and/or surviving spouses and family members, Department of Defense and Coast Guard civilians and their family members when stationed outside the United States, and other supporters of the Department of Defense. Those with limited use are APF, NAF and retired Department of Defense and Coast Guard civilians, Department of Defense contract personnel and technical representatives, reserve officers' training corps cadets when participating in field training or practice cruises, former prisoners of war and spouses of POWs or service members missing in action and their family members, other non-Department of Defense federal employees and contractors, Military Housing Privatization Initiative employees and residents, American Police Force and Numbered Air Force foreign national employees assigned and working directly for Department of Defense installations overseas, guest and members of the public.
Some military campgrounds will allow you to make a reservation. Depending on the campground, you can usually make reservations by phone, fax or email. In some cases, you may have to make a reservation by completing an online form. Some campgrounds may require you to make an advanced payment or to make a deposit in order for you to make a reservation. Sometimes, all you need to do to make a reservation in a campground is to leave your name.
The facilities in military campgrounds differ depending on the campground. Some of the facilities in campgrounds include picnic tables, barbecue grills, dump stations, picnic pavilions, restrooms, showers and laundry facilities. You might find campgrounds that have a community room, library, food court and swimming pool. Campgrounds may have an activity center, rental cabins, an archery range, softball fields, basketball and volleyball courts, bike paths, playgrounds and a marina.
