Situated in Caleveras County, California, Avery represents a census-designated area with a population numbering 672 people with 339 housing units. A census designated area includes populated settlements without municipal government but otherwise with every appearance that of the city, town or a village. Since Avery is located in Calaveras County, it is encompassed in the Pacific Time Zone. The place bears the name after the first postmaster George J. Avery. It is located on State Route 4 and has a total area of 4,5 square miles.

    • Avery hotel was built in 1851, as a family home, by Joseph and Sarah Godell of Maine. When the residents relocated, Nancy and Peter Avery, also of Maine, began to operate it as a hotel and accommodated some of the western households like Roy Rogers and Black Bart. It was known formally as "Half Way house" being located between Murphy's, Arnold and Calvary's Big Trees State park. The Cotelli family, who purchased the property in 1922, carried out renovations, while from 1991 restorations took place. As of 2011, the full name proclaims "Avery Hotel Restaurant & Saloon."

From the description itself, the hotel is filled with history and it is surrounded by scenic views. The parking area is exceptionally lit, there is a restaurant in hotel, and a total of six rooms spaced on two floors. Luxuries include whirlpool and fireplace.
