Aiken is located in Aiken County, South Carolina and is also the county seat; it is 20 miles northeast of Augusta, Georgia. Aiken was founded by William Aiken, president of the South Carolina Canal and Railroad Company, in 1833. In the 1870s, wealthy northerners ventured to the Aiken area to spend the winters in a warmer climate and also to enjoy the equestrian sports. Today, equestrian lovers can still take pleasure in thoroughbred racing, polo matches and steeplechase events in the area.
