East Bernard, Texas, a quaint little railroad town, was settled on the east side of the San Bernard River in 1850 by Jethro Spivi. It was relocated to the east side of the river in 1869 when the train depot, Bernard Station, became the center point. Officially named a town in 1874, East Bernard has grown to a population of 1,729 as of 2010. The town is located at GPS coordinates (29.528, -96.066) and the junction of U.S. 90 Alt. and SR 60 near the towns of Eagle Lake, Wharton and Rosenburg, Texas. There are no hotels in East Bernard, but lodging for all occasions can be found within a short, scenic drive.

    Tee Pee Motel

    • The Tee Pee Motel, located 16 1/2 miles from East Bernard in Wharton, was originally built in 1942, serving travelers heading across Texas on State Highway 60. It closed in the 1980s but was reopened in 2006 by lottery winners Barbara and Bryon Woods. Guest may stay in uniquely designed, air-conditioned, teepee-style rooms decorated with Native American art and a handmade quilt on the bed. Amenities include a refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, private baths, wireless Internet and cable. The motel is pet-friendly and handicap-accessible. Reservations are recommended well in advance due to the limited number of teepees.

    Rivendell Ranch

    • The Rivendell Ranch in East Bernard offers an updated 1920 ranch house for large gatherings and retreats. Located on a 200-acre working cattle ranch, guests stay in the four-bedroom, four-bathroom ranch home, which has a dining room, living room and large craft room. A wraparound porch allows guests to view the pastures and woods that surround the ranch house. Rivendell's rates include meals and there are separate rates for parties of three or less.
