Thomas Hospital, and famed blues singer Bessie Smith died there in 1937 due to injuries sustained in a car accident.
The hotel is considered a historical blues site and is a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail, a project that marks various sites in Mississippi related to the history and development of the blues. The Riverside has accommodated famous figures that include John F. Kennedy, Jr., Johnny Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Sam Cooke and Ike Turner.
