Located in Cass County, Texas, Hughes Springs was founded by Reese Hughes in 1839 near three mineral-rich springs. Surrounded by pine trees, Hughes Springs has a population of about 1,800. Its attractions include the Spring House, the Veterans Memorial Wall, movies in the park, horseshoe contests, trail riding, barbecue cooking, bird-watching and volleyball.
Nestled in the folds of the rustic Piney Woods, the Holly Hill Homestead is a serene and tranquil place to stay during your visit to Hughes Springs. This boutique hotel used to be an early 1900s farmhouse, and it still has a spacious porch overlooking the verdant gardens. This is a great spot for bird-watching. Wake up to freshly baked bread with herbs right from the backyard, and learn the story of this house's beautiful antiques.
This cozy, but spacious, loft-style apartment rests on the second floor of the old Masonic Lodge building. This hotel is named after Colonel Reese Hughes, once among the richest men in Texas. Just blocks away are antique shops, several restaurants, a grocer, a pharmacy and an old-fashioned barber -- just $5 a haircut -- as of 2011. Spring Creek Park is just a few minutes away, offering free movies and entertainment, and Dangerfield State Park is only three miles from the hotel. Jefferson, Pittsburg and Mount Pleasant are a 20-minute drive. Popcorn, cereal, oatmeal and a variety of hot drinks are provided in the cupboards.
Located in downtown Hughes Springs, this house dates back to 1919, when T.B. Keasler built it for his son and family. In 1978, Mrs. Keasler sold the house to the Abernathys, who used it as a Law and Real Estate office for almost a decade. Since then, it has been converted into a residence by Glen and Mary Watts. They specialize in banquets, baby showers, wedding receptions and teas -- as well as a good old fashioned bed and breakfast. The house is furnished with the couple's personal heirlooms, and it offers a beautiful view of Piney Woods.
Sitting in the heart of Hughes Springs, the Cottage on the Creek mixes the ancient and the modern to create a fun and relaxing atmosphere in beautiful, scenic landscapes. A sparkling stream runs through the middle of the property, lending the tranquil sound of water to a peaceful rest on the porch. The historic two-story, three-bedroom house was recently restored; it has a full kitchen and a washer and dryer. The bedrooms are on the lower level for the convenience of the handicapped and elderly.
